In preparation for rearmament, the German army began producing the 5-ton class Panzer I in 1934, but it was too small for training purposes, and the Panzer I, which was only equipped with a machine gun, was too small for full-scale use. I couldn't do target practice. Therefore, in 1934, the German Army Ordnance Bureau Section 6 requested submission of development design documents from three companies, Krupp, Henschel, and MAN. After comparing and considering three companies' proposals, MAN's was adopted and a prototype was completed in 1935, followed by the A type, the B type with thicker armor, and the C type with changes to the suspension and engine. In July 1937, the first mass-produced type A, which was based on the C type and equipped with an improved engine and transmission, was produced, followed by production of the B type in December 1937.
Production of the C type began in June 1938. A total of 1088 A, B, and C types were produced until April 1940, and in October 1938, during production, they were given the formal name of Panzer II Sd.
